After Poland: A Memoir Because of Primo Levi
Scheduled for publication release Fall 2018.
Cheryl travels to Poland to follow the journey of Italian Jewish writer Primo Levi from deportation in Italy east to Auschwitz in 1944. This journey includes teaching Levi's Survival in Auschwitz with her students, and a personal search of reading Polish poets, studying the work of Polish artists and war photographers, and researching Polish politics through the Second World War, into over forty years of Communism, through Solidarity, and into developing democracy. The story navigates the emotional and historical terrain of Poland from a contemporary Californian’s perspective—how the time in Poland changes and expands her historical and psychological understanding of what it means to be human in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It extends beyond Poland’s borders to Italy and Chile to confront the trauma of history through the works of writers, artists, and thinkers.
